So, you suspect that age has finally caught up with your computer and want to run a computer speed test to verify this?
A slow computer is not a great proposition. However, age has got little do with the sagging speed. Most computers fail a computer speed test because of negligence on the owner’s end. Surprised?
Given below are the most common causes of a slow computer and a few tips that can help you prevent them from occurring in the first place. Why do computers run slow?

The top reasons are:

• Malware infection
• A large number of programs running in the background
• A fragmented hard disk
• A bloated and/or fragmented registry

All these can be easily resolved. Want to know how? Here are the answers:

Keeping your computer safe from malware

Malware infections, without an iota of doubt, are the biggest cause of slow computer speed. To resolve malware-related issues, perform the following steps:

1. Install a reliable anti malware software if you do not have one.
2. Update your anti malware software.
3. Restart Windows in Safe Mode.
4. Run a malware scan on your computer.
5. Take appropriate action (as recommended by the software) against the reported threats.

Once you have removed all threats from your computer, it is necessary that you maintain your computer’s optimum functioning.

Do you ever wish you could watch your high definition news or sports broadcasts in a room other than that occupied by the main television set? If you are in a business where you want to stay on top of current events or want to keep on top the March Madness games then you may dream of having an HD television set available in your office, basement or even the garage. The question is how to get the video from one room to another without adding receivers.

Most people don’t want to pay out for multiple satellite receivers or worse, multiple satellite dishes or cable units. There is a solution that provides you with the ability to distribute high quality video in several locations throughout your home. These are called HDMI matrix switches.

These are devices that are used in the computer and digital signage industry. They can also be used to provide spectacular video and audio at different locations within your home. This matrix unit distributes video from multiple video sources to multiple displays.

Video matrix Switches

With video matrix switches, any of the video sources can be displayed on any of the outputs. Another alternative is to display one video input to multiple video outputs. Electronics have multiple connection types and the video matrix can display between VGA, HDMI, component, composite, and S-Video inputs that you will find on a HDMI LCD monitor or high-definition television set. Most of these video matrix units come with RS232, Infra-red, push buttons, and/or TCP IP controls.

Another great use for video matrix switches is to switch between cameras in a surveillance system. You can have cameras set up in different rooms of your home or even monitoring different locations outdoors. This is a common way for monitoring shopping malls and high security buildings. It works well for home monitoring, too.

Following these 10 tips will dramatically improve your computer security and leave you less likely to ask “How to protect my computer?” after you’ve suffered a breach!

1.) Buy and install anti-virus software: This is the one computer security measure everyone can implement easily and quickly. Simply put, the first thing you should do upon buying a new computer is add the anti-virus software. It won’t completely secure the computer, but a computer without anti-virus software is unsafe.

2.) Buy and install anti-spyware software: Spyware is software that is installed on your computer, without your knowledge, that allows outsiders to get a glimpse at your computer activities. Spyware is usually more annoying than damaging-if you’ve been subjected to pop-up ads, you’re probably a victim of spyware-but still, buying and installing the anti-spyware software will cut out that aggravation and allow your computer to run in a smoother fashion.

3.) Password protect your home and/or office wireless router. If you fail to do so, hackers can worm their way on to your wireless and steal valuable personal information from your computers. This has the added benefit of improving the performance of your wireless Internet: Your signal will be stronger without people in nearby homes and offices stealing it.

4.) Shut off your computer when you’re not using it. Many people like leaving their computers on 24/7 so that they can easily resume work after waking up or returning home. But whenever a computer is on, it is vulnerable to attacks from hackers. A computer that is shut off cannot be infiltrated by the bad guys!

5.) Be careful downloading email attachments. This qualifies as an “old-fashioned” computer security recommendation, but it’s still relevant. Someone from work sent you a Word doc? You’re probably OK. A spammer sent you an attachment in a bizarrely worded email? Delete, delete, delete! Also be careful with an email attachment that has been forwarded to you by someone else. There’s always the chance that the attachment picked up some malicious code at some point.

6.) Change up your passwords. A simple Google search will reveal common passwords you should avoid using. Also make sure your passwords aren’t obvious and predictable to those who know you-in other words don’t make your passwords the names of your children and don’t include the digits of your birthday or anniversary. Try, whenever possible, to have different passwords for every site, and keep a written document of your passwords in a safe spot.

7.) Regularly back up important data. This falls under the heading of “you can never be too safe.” If, despite all your efforts, something should go terribly wrong and a virus or a hacker renders your computer unusable, at least you won’t lose your vital files.

8.) Update all your software, from your Internet browser to essentials such as Word and Adobe Reader. These updates come with valuable patches that address any security issues that have cropped up since the software was released.

9.) When making purchases on the Internet, only buy from “secured” websites. Failing to do so leaves you vulnerable to identity theft. You can find information about a website’s security level at the bottom of the page.

10.) Be vigilant! The most pivotal part of computer security is asking yourself, every single day, “how to protect my computer?” Daily maintenance of your computer is the best way to keep it safe and operating at peak efficiency!

If there is one reason as to why you should always be nice to an IT technician in your company, it is that he or she has the capability and capacity to see all that is going on in your computer system if he or she so wishes to do so. To say the truth, there is nothing like privacy when it comes to working on net work or work computers. Even that laptop computer you purchased the other day for your private computing when connected to a company’s network, it is no longer private – everything you do on it can be observed by a knowledgeable IT technician.

Apart from this, these professionals can actually check and see any website you visited outside the permitted sites, every email that you sent over the internet, the installed software, in additional to all saved documents in your computer hard disk.

For instance, if a certain investigation mission has been sanctioned by the bosses, there is little the file originator could do to prevent it from being accessed by snoopy IT technicians; in fact, they can access the information even before it has reached its recipients, thereby spilling the beans in advance. However, there are several things you can do to make it harder for unscrupulous IT technicians from carrying out these unauthorized snoops.

Utilize the available encryption technology and encrypt a segment of your computer’s hard drive or sensitive files so that if anyone wants to access the said files or any other sensitive data, he or she will have to input an accessing password. However, check your company’s IT policies before encrypting the said hard drive as you may have just performed or want to perform a disallowed action.

As the coordinator for a think tank which happens to operate online, I am often blown away by the computer programmers of our day who think that they can solve all the world’s problems by designing a better computer system. It’s not going to happen folks, and unfortunately, many of the computer programmers are so busy programming that they do not live out in the real world, and they haven’t done the things that they need to do to understand how to build the best system.

Yes, many of them have incredible experiences in multiple industries, and they are incredibly intelligent. I can’t take that away from them, it’s the truth. No, not all of them, but there are a lot of sharp people out there who are computer programmers. Yes, we should listen to them and they often know what they’re talking about when it comes to their trade, but they aren’t going to fix the world with a computer program. In fact, I would submit to you that many of the computer programs that we use today have forced us into a limited and finite way of doing things, and often the wrong way. Over time it becomes more inefficient, and a computer program is forcing us to fill in the blanks, and submit information that is irrelevant to what we are trying to do.

When reading about Bill Gates and how he reduced the number of forms at Microsoft down to two or three, and how everything was put onto the computer, and each new form was just adding onto the original information to bypass the corporate bureaucracy, he was describing back then the future of enterprise software which we now use everywhere today. That’s a good thing, it is quite efficient, however when we force the proper way of doing things into little boxes and computer programs, we negate the possibility for robust evolution, and cross-pollination thinking.
